BBC & Disabled Music

Bristol’s Colston Hall will be supporting the first ever BBC Music Day on Friday 5th June 2015.

This unique day is a nationwide celebration of music with the aim of connecting communities and generations. It will feature live music events and performances across the country, with broadcasts on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, BBC 5 Live, BBC 6 Music, Asian Network, BBC Local Radio, BBC Breakfast, BBC One’s The One Show and online at www.bbc.co.uk/musicday .

Colston Hall will play a leading role on the day in championing disability and diversity in music and the arts. BBC Music Day will see the Hall welcoming a unique special educational needs and disability youth concert.

Performing with custom built instruments using new assistive technology, children from the South West Open Youth Orchestra will play alongside members of The British Paraorchestra and South West youth choirs including Bristol Youth Choir and Elmfield Signing Choir in a daytime celebration led by renowned conductor and founder of the The British Paraorchestra, Charles Hazlewood. Paul Whittaker OBE, Music and the Deaf founder, will lead the signing.

Organised by Bristol Plays Music - the music education hub for Bristol based at Colston Hall - BBC Music Day preludes the first ever Fast Forward Festival on 2nd & 3rd July, which aims to celebrate and challenge the perception of music and disability.

Member of The British Paraorchestra, Charlotte White, said: “I believe everyone, regardless of theircircumstance should have musical opportunities.”
