CZECH
The Czech Republic, is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west, Austria to the south, Slovakia to the east and Poland to the north. Its capital and largest city, with 1.3 million inhabitants, is Prague. Its currency is Czech Koruna.
Prague
The historic centre of Prague is divided into five areas, spanning both banks of the Vltava River. Charles Bridge is the main pedestrian connection between the two.
On one side of the Vltava River is the Old Town (Staré Mesto), with the Old Town Square at its heart; the New Town (Nové Mesto), with Wenceslas Square at its heart; and the Jewish Quarter (Josefov).
On the other side of the river is the Lesser Town (Malá Strana), and the Castle District (Hradcany), with Prague Castle at its heart.
Due to the very cheap food and drink prices, the city has become a popular choice for Hen and Stag trips.
Prague is very old so is characterized by winding alleys and mainly, small and large uneven cobble stones, instead of pavements, which makes it very difficult for a wheelchair. I have a manual chair but powered chairs and scooters may get stuck!
There are many hotels with bars and restaurants, which have been adapted with accessible toilets and lifts but many of the stand-alone ones are not accessible and have long staircases. Outdoor attractions, like in the Jewish Quarter, are also not accessible.
I stayed at the Hotel Rott which is the oldest hotel in the city. The four- star accommodation is in the Old Town and around the corner from the Old Clock. (Pražský orloj was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working).
It has a smooth- step free entrance and a small ramp leading the lift. My disabled room was the first room reached after coming out of the lift. It had wider doors and a wet room. The sink and toilet had rails and the shower had one rail. It had a tilted ‘bench’ seat, which was fine for me, but it would depend on how much strength you have.
e room had two, good height, beds and a table at the head of one of them which helped with access.
A breakfast buffet (reached by the lift) was included in the price and the hotel also had a restaurant attached to it, serving traditional Czech food.
Melnik
During my trip, I also travelled to the small town of Melnik (about 25km from Prague). It has steep hills but a flat, cobbled, main town centre. I stayed at the Olympionik hotel.
It had a short tamp to reach the hotel entrance and a step- free door. The disabled room was situated next to the reception desk. It had a wide door and a large wet room. The toilet was surrounded by rails with one of them next to the shower seat. The bed had a cupboard next to it but I found the bed too low to get up from on my own but it would depend on your height. The room also had a large, hollow, dressing table enabling you to tuck your legs in. A buffet breakfast was also included in the price and was on the same level as the bedroom.
