Norway is Europe’s northernmost country. Famed for the beautiful mountains. fjords, and ski slopes, it is also known for having one of the highest standards of living in the world.

OSLO

Oslo is the capital of Norway and although very cultured and peaceful, be prepared for the expensive prices, especially on alcohol and cabs.

There are many sights to see, such as, Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum, the Munch Museum, Holmenkollen and the Nobel Peace Centre

If you want a break from sightseeing, you can take the train to Tusenfryd Amusement Park, or enjoy the latest ballet or opera production at the recently built Opera House.

Trams, trains and most buses are accessible but the older vehicles are not. If you are planning on using public transport, it is advisable to buy an Oslo Pass. It provides free travel on public transport, free admission to museums and sights, free parking in Oslo municipal car parks, and discounts on car hire,. You can buy passes to last 24, 48 and 72 hours.

Roads are generally accessible and lifts often accompany stairs but due to the cities drainage system, piping often goes across the pavement, making it difficult with a wheelchair.

I stayed at the Thon Hotel Opera , which is situated next to Oslo City train station and opposite the Opera House. Disabled rooms feature a spacious bathroom with a toilet with grab rails and a shower with a seat. It folds into the wall, which allows an able-bodied person to easily have a shower, if they are travelling with you. Breakfast is included in the price and consists of a large buffet with a wide choice of fresh fruit, bread, cereal, cheeses and freshly cooked eggs and bacon. The hotel also has a sauna and terrace, providing spectacular views.

FERRY FROM NORWAY TO DENMARK

Experience the sights and sounds of Oslo and Copenhagen by taking a ferry trip between the two countries.  Departing from each city, daily at 5pm, you will arrive at the next destination early the next morning.

Crown Seaways and Pearl Seaways are both accessible as a foot or car passenger. Just like a hotel, when booking, you are given a wide choice of the type of cabin you wish to stay in. They vary in size and price,  depending on whether you would like a sea view, television or complimentary breakfast. All cabins are en suite with a bedding and towel service, table and wardrobe. Accessible bathrooms are available with rails round the toilet and a shower seat that folds into the wall.

The ferry is completely accessible with much to do. There are a variety of restaurants, including a buffet and steakhouse, and a choice of bars and cafes. There is also a cinema, nightclub, kids club and even wine tasting. Everything gets very booked up, so it is better to try and book everything you would like to do, as soon as you are settled on the boat.

When you arrive at your destination, an alarm wakes you up, and you are told what time you must depart the boat. If you are taking the return journey, you can leave your possessions, but take any valuables with you.
