Holliday Without The 'Net?

21 Facebook updates, 28 Pinterest pins, 14 work emails, 21 Tweets, 7 Vines, 28 Instagram posts, 14 personal emails, 28 texts and 14 Snapchats…the average week on a family holiday.

With many people heading away for half term in late October, a survey by Royal Caribbean International has revealed that more than half (51%) of us can’t get through a holiday without gadgets and 52% say that their holiday experience is enhanced by technology and keeping connected to people back home.

Every day while on holiday a family will on average send four texts, two personal emails, two work emails, one Vine, two Snapchats, four Instagrams, three tweets, four images on Pinterest and four Facebook updates – totaling close to 200 social media updates every week! Some respondents admitted to sending over 15 tweets and Facebook updates a day.

Men are the more prolific communicators and are keener to keep in touch while away, being twice as likely to post on social media channels than women and the younger generation (18-24) find it harder to switch off from work; they are three times more likely to keep their boss updated on their holiday news than 45-54 year olds.

And contrary to popular belief it’s parents who are more consumed by gadgets with 21% saying they were more guilty of being on their ‘toys’ than their teenage children; with 25% playing games, 27% texting and 38% updating Facebook.

However, while we obviously love taking our gadgets on holiday with us there are some sacred times when gadgets are banned; at meal times (39%), when on day trips (27%) by the pool (21%) and when on the beach (14%).

The survey, conducted by Royal Caribbean International to celebrate the launch of the three new Quantum Class ships – the world’s first ‘SMART’ ships – also found that we take a barrage of different gadgets away with us, with a 1/3 of us even having a special ‘gadget bag’.

The gadgets we take on holiday:
47% iPads/ other tablet
53% smart phones
20% Nintendo DS / games console
25% laptops
20% Kindles
31% iPods/ music devices
13% DVD players

How do you cope on holiday?
