Travel
search engine, KAYAK, processes over one billion queries for travel information
annually and World Cup data has been drawn from these searches. Prices and
demand for flights and hotels to see the action in Brazil this summer were
collected from UK, French, German, Spanish and Italian searches.
The
data reveals that Brazil should not only prepare itself for the football but
for the hordes of English fans descending. The UK site saw the largest overall
spike in demand for flights to Brazil this summer, with a year-on-year increase
of 697%. By comparison Italian fans have shown a lack of faith in their team’s
likely performance, with flights increasing a comparatively small 147%
year-on-year.
European
football rivalry hasn’t just been reserved for the pitch, but also in the
securing of the best deals on flights and hotels. English fans come out with
the trophy, paying on average £630.67 for their flights while German, French,
Spanish and Italian fans have to fork out more to support their teams. The German
fans are left on the bench, paying an average of £700.96 for their flights.
Let’s hope their bad luck in travel costs follows them onto the pitch!
Comparing
hotel costs in Brazil’s five main cities, KAYAK calculated fans will have to
pay more for a bed if they want to watch the first or final matches, based in
Rio de Janerio. Rio’s average hotel costs £236 per
night, closely followed by Fortaleza at £220. English fans who planning to
watch the match against Costa Rica on 24th June should be rest assured;
Belo Horizonte has the cheapest hotels averaging £195 per night.
