Staycation Support

Domestic tourism has seen an increase in popularity across the UK with many Brits choosing to holiday at home instead of travelling abroad.

As a result, both local businesses and the UK economy are reaping the benefits as confirmed by research from leading UK property rental company, holidaycottages.co.uk, which revealed that nearly three quarters (72 per cent) of people are more likely to support local business when holidaying within the UK than when they are at home.

Encouragingly for the domestic tourism sector, nearly half (42 per cent) of those surveyed believe that holiday standards in the UK have risen over the last five to 10 years, and just over half (51 per cent) believe that there is now more choice available. The survey also found that over a third (35 per cent) of people find it less stressful to holiday in the UK than abroad, without the added concerns around airports and luggage allowances.

More than half (63 per cent) of 25-34 year olds surveyed make an effort to stay in independently owned or run holiday homes as a way of supporting local businesses when staying in the UK. This is compared to over three quarters (82 per cent) of those aged 55 or above who visit local attractions and tourists sites.

The research also revealed that nearly three quarters of men (74 per cent) are more likely to support local businesses when travelling within the UK than at home. When asked how they would support local business whilst holidaying in the UK, over three quarters (81 per cent) of men said that they eat out at local restaurants more often. Nearly half (46 per cent) of the women surveyed stated that they recognise the importance of supporting both local and British tourism.

Residents in the Midlands are particularly supportive of local businesses. Those in the West Midlands (85 per cent) were most likely to support local businesses by buying gifts and produce from local shops whilst on holidaying in the UK. While four in five (81 per cent) of those from the East Midlands opt to eat out local restaurants more often than they would at home. Nearly half (45 per cent) of people surveyed from East Anglia believe that the British tourism industry has made a big effort to support and promote local businesses and economies.
