Home Alone For Christmas?

More than half of Brits will be spending Christmas away from home, and many more would like to but can't get the time off work

The Hotels.com survey found that over half (55%) of Brits plan to spend Christmas away from home this year, with 37% of these citing spending quality time with their family as the main reason for travelling over this period. However, a survey by Hotels.com found that a quarter (22%) blame being unable to book time off work for stopping their yuletide escape.

Nearly a third (30%) of those on the move have chosen to celebrate the occasion in a hotel, either in the UK or abroad. This is not necessarily to avoid the revelries but rather to enjoy them to the full as two-thirds (66%) of travellers opted for a hotel offering the traditional Christmas celebration.

Lack of money for travelling was found to be the top reason (43%) why Brits are spending the festive period at home, while 14% revealed elderly family members who find it difficult to travel were the reason they couldn’t get away.

Those stuck at home over the Christmas break need not worry, as buying your loved one a holiday as a present proves to be popular, with 39% having treated their nearest and dearest to a trip as a Christmas present. Additionally, a fifth (19%) of Brits would spend money they received at Christmas on a holiday for themselves.

If we could get away, a staggering 44% of those surveyed admitted they would happily leave a family member behind to go travelling over Christmas. The 'Home Alone' effect came into play here, as one in ten (10%) Brits confessed that they would rather spend the holiday without their parents, while the mother-in-law came in second place with 8% as the next to be abandoned. A cheeky 4% went as far as to say they wanted to leave their partner or spouse behind this year.

How do you spend Christmas?
