Holiday For £3

More than 6,000 lost or broken mallets, over 3,000,000 tent pegs hammered and almost 800,000 teaspoons used – this isn’t a modern art piece, but rather a few of the components used to create camping holiday adventures over 50 years.

Since launching in 1965 Canvas Holidays offers 24 times more tents – from 25 in 1965 to 599 in 2014

An estimated 6,176 mallets have been lost or broken while erecting the tents.

More than 3 million tent pegs have been used over the past 50 years

As well as classic tent options, guests can now choose to stay in a luxurious, fully plumbed Safari Tent Deluxe, in one of a range of modern mobile homes, a spacious and comfy lodge or a stylish apartment.

The cost of a family holiday in the 1960s cost between five shillings – eight shillings and sixpence per person per night – in today’s money, that’s less than £3, maximum, for a seven night holiday
Today a camping holiday with Canvas costs from £201per party for a week in a Classic 2-bedroom mobile home at Camping les Etangs Fleuris (Paris) in late September and up to £1,417 for a family of up to six staying in a Deluxe two-bedroom lodge at Camping la Croix du Vieux Pont (Paris) for seven nights in August.

Over the past 50 years, Canvas Holidays’ range of campsites has increased by 98 per cent
1965: Two campsites in Normandy
2014: 87 campsites in 8 countries across Europe
The company’s longest serving campsite is Camping Manor Farm, Switzerland, introduced in 1968.

Today this campsite is still a bestseller
Holidaymakers’ method of travel has evolved.
In 1965, 100 per cent of Canvas Holidays guests travelled to their destination by ferry, in 2005 this had reduced to 76 per cent and by 2014 it has almost halved, with 51 per cent of guests travelling by ferry

And finally… over Canvas Holidays’ 50 year history, approximately 795,500 teaspoons have been distributed to guests – a well-made brew is an essential part of any camping holiday

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Canvas Holidays is asking campers to send their holiday memorabilia and join the trip down memory lane. Photographs, stories and video can be uploaded online at
www.canvasholidays.co.uk/customer-stories or sent to memories@canvasholidays.co.uk. Anyone who submits memorabilia is in with the chance to win one of five tickets to win one of five exclusive places at the Canvas Holidays' 50th anniversary black tie ball in Edinburgh, on 31 January 2015. Travel and one night’s accommodation will be provided for the lucky winners.
